The study conducted by Juniper Research in collaboration with VOX Solutions highlights the growing threat of Artificially Inflated Traffic (AIT) and SMS trashing, and their significant financial and operational impact on enterprises and mobile operators.
According to Juniper Research, AIT cost enterprises $8.5 billion globally in 2023, and this figure is expected to rise to $23.4 billion by 2027, when AIT could represent 11% of total messaging traffic.
Key findings show that while A2P SMS has become an important revenue stream for operators, fraud such as AIT threatens this revenue and distorts enterprises’ understanding of messaging performance by manipulating conversion rates. Since more than 50% of A2P SMS traffic is linked to authentication, enterprises with large user bases are particularly vulnerable, creating opportunities for fraudulent telecom operators. This has also led to increasing complaints from enterprises, damaging trust between operators and their clients.
To address this issue, VOX Solutions proposes a three-tiered strategy combining technology, financial recovery (collection), and collaboration across the telecom value chain to effectively reduce fraudulent traffic and protect the A2P ecosystem.
